Twain wanted to illustrate the life of a common Southerner. On a deeper, and more concealed, level, he was criticizing Southern prejudice. Likely his most controversial act was the humanization of Jim, as many citizens saw slaves (and treated them) as subhuman chattle.

Huck Finn is a literary classic. It can be analyzed very thoroughly, as we have been doing in class. It gives a representation of the antebellum South, as Rise to Rebellion gave a representation of Colonial America. Simply put, it is a literary standard that kids need to have read before they leave high school.

I had the same question about the introduction of the book as Jaime did. I thought it was clever and funny but I didn't completely grasp it. It adds to Twain's character as a writer.

Mark Twain wrote The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn in order to criticize the south. Twain also put some transcendentalist ideas into the book. Twain also captured the feel of America at the time and how there was always the possibility of a greater life by traveling west and how America was the land of opportunity and how all problems can be escaped from, even an abusive father.

I will remember the relationship of Huck and Tom and how Huck grows as a character. Huck was always more logical but he still admired Tom and all his schemes. Also I will remember how Huck grew and how Tom was used to show that. I will also remember How Huck is constantly conflicted by what is "wrong" versus what is "right" and how the southern mentality and his upbringing told him what he was doing was wrong even though it seems like the right thing to us today.

Huck Finn should be read of school because even though it uses a certain word that is considered to derogatory to peoples of African American decent, that isn't the point. In fact, Huckleberry Finn shows Jim as a person and as a dear friend and fatherly figure to Huck. The reason that the word is used is to show the colloquial language of the south to get a greater picture of the story.

Huckleberry Finn is a great American classic because it it the first time a slave is humanized and seen as a person which is a giant leap especially for a writer who was raised in the south. Twain wasn't afraid of what others thought of him and instead told what he believed was true which was a great deed.

I think that Twains purpose of writing Huck Finn is to mock the society at that period of time, Huck Finn was also a social satire, and to discuss some issues that were the most significant at that period of time such as slavery and injustice.

I would find that outlook to be racist and immoral. Just because the author uses the degrading "N" word does not mean that the book should be banned from schools because THAT word actually holds meaning to the story in that it is condescending and probably shouldn't be used to refer to any such person. This story is an all-time classic because it allows us to compare how far we, as a society, have come from the "norms" that had been prevalent 150 years ago. Looking at it now we find it ridiculous and somewhat impractical to subordinate a person due to their race, gender, background, etc. but to them it was a way of life and we need to learn about that. We learn history so we do not repeat it, if we disacknowledged this novel in schools, people regress from all that african-americans have fought for and establish themselves to be better than the person sitting next to them. Now that would be a ridiculous ending to a "free" nation.
